The Unitiator app solves a major problem for venues: social validation

For Portuguese entrepreneur Márcio Leite, the inspiration for his business Unitiator came while strolling through the streets of Madrid.

With his background in economics and management consulting, Márcio saw an opportunity to solve one of the biggest issues facing bars, cafes and restaurants: social validation. The solution? The Unitiator app. Márcio and his team are seeking €47,000 to jumpstart their concept, accelerate app development and launch their app in early 2016.

  1. When did you decide to become an entrepreneur, and why?

For me, it was a natural process to become an entrepreneur. I have always been a person who takes the initiative ever since I remember. I’ve always been drawn to trying new things and managing groups of people. The idea for Unitiator came to me in Madrid last April while I was on vacation with my girlfriend. The city is loaded with bars, cafes and restaurants.

I saw the social validation effect happen right before my eyes. Some venues were packed while others were totally empty, without any difference in quality. This observation became the driving force of Unitiator. We only had to make use of the technologies existing today to create social validation. And with the help of my girlfriend, whom has encouraged me ever since that night in Madrid, I began working on this and never stopped.

  1. What kind of entrepreneur are you?

My signature style is collaboration, in which I believe deeply. When I gather people, it’s all about creating a common objective that binds everyone together. Having a strong vision or mission that inspires people builds a strong drive within the whole team.

For years my aim has been to prevent food wastage, and this also motivates me to make Unitiator a success. I see myself as an optimist who refuses to give up easily – like many entrepreneurs!

  1. In a few sentences, introduce your company

Unitiator is going to be a game-changer. It gathers urban pioneers into bars, cafes and restaurants that could use some social validation power. So on a short notice, these establishments call for people through the smartphone app and offer them a drink or snack.

All that the pioneer has to do is to enjoy it and be there. It’s the perfect deal: a good time in exchange for your presence, and meanwhile you’re helping the venue attract new customers. A win-win.

  1. Describe the past, present and future of your company

Unitiator is like a baby about to be born. We mixed the perfect DNA and now we are waiting for the last developments before it comes to life.

We started with gathering knowledge, the spark of any company. And so we learned everything about social validation and other social processes we come across in the hospitality sector.

We spoke to many bar and restaurant owners in Rotterdam to learn everything about their experiences and perspectives. Their reactions convinced me that the business model is viable, that we have a great idea in our hands.

Breaking resistance in the market with this new concept will be the biggest challenge. We have to go step by step. City by city. But surely Unitiator is going to conquer the hospitality world.

  1. What is the unique value of the products/services you offer?

UnitiatorThe unique thing about Unitiator is that it makes things happen at short notice. It gives quiet venues the chance to draw people in immediately. And those people will draw more people, simply by being there.

Who would enter a place that is totally empty? We are social beings, we prefer to be where others are.

It’s a vicious cycle. Empty venues remain empty exactly because they are empty. Unitiator enables its users to solve this problem for hospitality venues while they benefit with free drinks/snacks.

We haven’t seen anything yet that solves this problem. Our concept is unique.

  1. What is the main goal of your equity crowdfunding campaign?

We aim to reach two goals with our campaign. The first is to raise € 47.000 funding that we need for the development of the app and commercial activity. The other is to become a collaborative company where anyone can be a part of the enterprise, contributing with ideas and following its developments. We value the support of everyone.

  1. Why did you choose crowdfunding?

The Unitiator team in collaboration mode

Crowdfunding fits our objectives like a glove. Why? Because the concept can only be a success if it can convince the crowd and gather enough support. The campaign is therefore a test case for Unitiator.

I also want to involve my network, my friends, and my family. I enjoy to share the growth of the company with them. I really value the trust invested in me by the first visionaries, and I intend to give the biggest reward to them. It’s a way of sharing our future success with the people that supported us right from the start. Because there is no such thing as starting a company by yourself.

  1. And why Symbid?

We chose Symbid because it is a serious platform for investments and at the same time it is easily accessible to people who wish to invest with a modest budget.

Not unimportantly, Symbid seems to have a good track record of successful companies that went through the same process. It feels good.

  1. Give 3 key reasons to invest in your company
  • You will be part of an innovative company open to your ideas as a partner (big or small). This way you can be an active part of our growth if you wish, enhancing your own chances of return of investment;
  • You will help make the world a fairer place with a more efficient use of resources, because the app helps venues that deserve to have a crowd and also helps to fight food waste;
  • You will have a very high potential return of investment – we predict that in three years your investment whill have quadrupled in value.
